AI Cannibalisation Watch is a widget on your brand dashboard that flags a specific pattern: a Google search query where your organic clicks have dropped, at the same time as your AI visibility for a closely matching prompt has risen. The concern it’s watching for is straightforward — if an AI platform is now answering the question directly, some searchers may be getting what they need from the AI answer and never clicking through to your site at all.

What it’s looking for

For each candidate, Surfais compares two trends over the same recent window, for the same underlying topic:
  • Clicks — from your connected Search Console data, whether organic clicks for that query are up or down.
  • Visibility — from your AI scans, whether your presence on the closest-matching tracked prompt is up or down.
A candidate surfaces when clicks are falling on a query at the same time visibility is rising on the prompt it’s matched to — the combination that suggests an AI answer may be substituting for the click, not just ordinary search fluctuation. Each candidate shows you the query, the matched prompt, and how closely they were matched, so you can judge for yourself whether the connection makes sense.

Where it appears

The widget sits on your brand dashboard, below your search-vs-AI comparison. It only appears once there’s a genuine candidate to show — with no connected Search Console history, or no query currently showing this pattern, the widget simply isn’t there. This is deliberate: an empty or reassuring “nothing to report” card would just be noise on a dashboard that’s otherwise built to surface what needs your attention.
The query-to-prompt match is based on similarity, not an exact link you’ve set up yourself, so treat each candidate as a signal worth a look rather than a certainty. A closely worded match is more trustworthy than a loose one — the match percentage shown alongside each candidate is there to help you judge that.

Acting on a candidate

There’s no button to click here — this is a signal to prompt a judgement call, not an automated fix. When a candidate shows up, it’s worth checking:
  • Does the AI answer actually cover what your page covers? If a platform is now giving a complete answer to the same question your page targets, that’s a real signal your content may need to do more than just rank — it needs to give people a reason to click through rather than stop at the answer.
  • Is your own page still the best answer to that query? A drop in clicks alongside rising AI visibility on the same topic is a reasonable prompt to review and refresh that page, since it tells you the topic is actively being answered by AI right now.
  • Is this the tracked prompt worth watching most closely? Use Prompt detail to see exactly how your brand is being described on the matched prompt, and Why scores move if you want to understand the visibility trend in more depth.
