The idea
Ranking well on Google and being cited in AI answers are two different things, measured two different ways. A query can send you steady organic clicks for years while never once surfacing your brand in a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer, simply because no one has told Surfais to track it. Coverage Gaps exists to catch that blind spot: it’s the list of queries where you have proven demand on Google, but no visibility on the AI side because there’s no AI measurement happening yet. This is different from a query you’re tracked on and losing — that’s a visibility problem, covered by Why scores move. A coverage gap is a measurement problem: real demand you simply aren’t watching. How gaps are computed
Every gap on this page is computed live, directly from your Search Console queries and your current prompt library — there’s no batch delay. That means the moment you track a gap as a prompt, it disappears from the default view and reappears correctly under “In library” the next time you check, with no lag to wait out. Each row also carries an Opportunity band — High, Medium, or Low — based on how much genuine Google search volume the query carries, so you can prioritise the gaps most worth tracking first rather than working through the list alphabetically.Reading the table
Query, Impressions, Clicks, Avg position
Pulled straight from Search Console — the exact search term, how many times it showed your site in Google results, how many clicks it earned, and your average ranking position.
In library
Yes or No. Yes means this query already exists as an active prompt, so Surfais is measuring your AI coverage for it. No means it’s a genuine gap — real Google demand with no AI measurement yet.
AI Mentions
Only populated once a query is in your library — it’s the number of times your brand was actually mentioned across AI scans of that tracked prompt in the selected window. A dash means the query isn’t tracked yet, so there’s nothing to report.
Opportunity
High, Medium, or Low, based on search volume. A useful first pass for deciding which gaps to track first when the list is long.
The Show filter
A Show filter above the table controls which queries you see, with three modes:- New gaps — the default view. Shows only untracked queries, so you’re always looking at fresh opportunities rather than ones you’ve already handled.
- In library — shows only queries you’ve already tracked, useful for auditing what you’re measuring and how it’s performing.
- All queries — everything at once, with the In library column telling tracked and untracked rows apart.
Tracking a gap as a prompt
Select one or more gaps using the checkboxes and use the bulk-track action to add them straight to your prompt library — no need to leave the page or set each one up individually. Once tracked, Surfais starts measuring AI coverage for that query from the next scan onward, and its AI Mentions column starts populating. If you’d rather track just one query on its own terms — choosing its exact wording or countries — use Open in prompts on that row instead, which takes you to prompt creation with the query pre-filled.
